ARTIST STATEMENT: I am interested in updating the conventions of still life by picturing things that reflect the way we currently live. Remnants of our consumer culture continue to find their way into my work. Traditionally, still life paintings have portrayed items from the realm of the domestic….food, utensils, dishes, flowers and other elements that celebrate the table. These days, however, our food often arrives at the table packaged up, sealed and sanitized. Table tops and interior spaces become resting places for boxes and other detritus waiting to be sorted or discarded.... "At first glance, it may look like Licht has given the classical genre of still-life painting a 'Sex and the City' update, replacing arrangements of apples and oranges with those of shopping bags from Bendel’s and Bergdorf ’s. But while the ostensible subject of these deft little oils is, indeed, the trappings of shopping, it’s clear that Licht’s real interest lies in the prima materia of paint." --The New Yorker
