(1955 - ) Nocona Burgess presents strikingly modern portraits of Indigenous women and men from various tribal nations of North America. Born into one of the notable Native American families, Burgess is the great-great grandson of respected Comanche chief, Quanah Parker. His paintings combine careful research, firsthand knowledge and raw passion. By blending vibrantly-colored shapes with boldly-outlined facial features and traditional dress in a singular, monumental style that feels classic, Burgess explores the cultural context, life story and identity of each of his sitters. In this way, the artist encourages us to reevaluate our perceptions of Native people and to consider the fascinating and often highly-politicized place of portraiture in Native American art. Nocona Burgess lives at Cochiti Lake, New Mexico. His art is found in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, among other notable museums nationwide. *
