Has been painting scenes of the Cayman Islands since he first arrived from England, in 1987. He began, using pastels, painting the faces of the local people, and was the principal artist at the VAS show in 1988, on the site of the present-day Ritz Carlton. As his subject matter turned to landscapes, John became well-known for his vivid use of colour, especially when capturing the turquoise of the sea and the beautiful red poinciana trees. Over the next few years John published several limited-edition prints, and was popular throughout the Caribbean, including the Virgin Islands, St. Maarten and of course, Cayman. In the new millennium, John returned to the UK, but would frequently send paintings back to Cayman, in his new preferred medium, acrylics. He travelled too, painting English landscapes, Tuscany, Sardinia and French rural scenes, but his favourite subject was always the Cayman Islands. John has been back in Cayman since 2015, and paints prolifically. He is represented by three major galleries and exhibits originals, giclées and prints. If you have been in Cayman for any length of time, it is likely that you are already familiar with his work. John paints all the favourite island scenes, and will tell you that his technique and style is still developing. Along with the beaches, cottages and glimpses of times gone by, John thrives on new challenges. His latest works include water-lilies, and close-ups of flowers, and paintings of the coastlines around Spotts, East End and North Side.
