Raised on the coast of Maine, Sarah Ingraham is a Brooklyn artist whose practice spans painting, murals, rug making, and wallpaper design. Grounded in art history and the decorative arts, Sarah looks to global ceramics and textiles for structure, pattern, and color. She draws on the long lineage of still life and landscape and recasts both in a contemporary key to explore pleasure, vitality, and visual abundance.Sarah earned a BA in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Vermont and continued studio study at Central Saint Martins in London. Early work in screen-printed wallpaper sharpened her sense of layered color and repeat. That training shapes an intuitive, improvisational process in the studio. “I start with a shape and push color until the painting clicks,” she says. “I want immediate visual impact and a rhythm you can feel.”Residencies expand her palette and materials, including the Fish Factory Creative Centre in Iceland and Nocefresca in Sardinia. Earlier projects with Spruce Artist Residency in Pennsylvania, along with exhibitions such as Vase at Alma’s in Richmond and Tuft in Philadelphia, deepened her interest in scale, surface, and pattern. Sarah’s exhibition history also includes Open Studios with GSS in Brooklyn, multiple shows at the Francis Colburn Gallery in Burlington, municipal and open studio presentations in London, and the Junior Prize Winner’s Exhibition at UVM. She received the Black Horse Fine Art Award in 2016.Color drives every decision. Flowers, vessels, and patterned grounds become engines of hue and structure. A Maine painter at heart and a Brooklyn artist in practice, Sarah contributes to contemporary Maine art while embracing large formats as a mural artist. Her paintings reflect the clarity of Maine and the energy of the city, decorative in the best sense, built by hand, and made to be lived with.Hear more about Sarah’s artistic journey on Radio Maine.
