Catalog available to order HERE. My work is rooted in the act of making. I adapt traditional ceramics techniques to creating art, with a particular focus on deploying clay’s plasticity. For 25 years, I have used these techniques to create fluid abstract forms that populate sprawling site-specific installations. With this show, I seek to explore other aspects of the clay medium and its potential for artistic expression. Some of my work here delves into matters of perception, including the effects that can be achieved through miniaturizing ceramic elements; installing ordered masses of hand-formed elements; and, even incorporating non-ceramic materials. My other pieces investigate clay’s material qualities. These circular ceramic “slabs” are experiments with form, color, and composition, achieved by physically manipulating clay. This process creates distinctive visual effects: blobs of different-colored clays smush together; vibrant colors juxtapose with neutrals; some edges are sharp while others blur; some forms float forward while others recede. Part sculpture, part painting, part something else, these slabs are a departure for me, and they’re entirely their own. - Jennifer L.
