Inspired by the historic 1913 Armory Show exhibition of Modern Art in New York, Karl Knaths moved from Chicago to Massachusetts and marked the beginning of his life-long relationship with Provincetown and Modernism. Author Dorothy Gees Seckler observes about the artist: “From his reading of the Bible [and]…the mystical doctrines of Emmanual Swedenborg, Knaths gradually derived a concept of a structured universe to which the structures of a painting could be related.” Musical composition and the mystic meanings of numbers also inform the palette and implementation of complex theories inherent in Knaths’ work.
