Herman Maril was born in Maryland in 1908 and spent summers painting in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Both states claim him proudly. Maril’s landscapes, seascapes, and interiors are lyrical, spacious, and filled with all the light and serenity to be found in everyday activities: a woman hanging the laundry, a fisherman cleaning the catch of the day, a family playing by the sea. His simplified subjects and abstracted environments make the most common and relatable of human experiences sublime. And they do so with clarity and simplicity.
