Alan Boileau – Artist’s Statement Canadian artist, Alan Boileau was born in Kitchener, Ontario and now lives in Osoyoos, B.C. where he is surrounded by stunning landscape; lakes and mountains that inspire his beautiful works of art. Sometime in the 80’s, Boileau’s talent as a woodworker merged with his artistic vision, and he developed and created his first wood wall sculptures. He focused on the sculptural effect of his unique medium to create highly textural and tactile pieces, full of depth and character. Inspired by nature and the natural grains found in wood, Boileau also has as an appreciation for color and texture found in fashion, furniture and interior design. Every time he sets out to create a piece of his art, he celebrates new ways that color takes to the wood, or how another shape might look using a different thickness, or cutting the perfect curves to nestle against one another. This fascination with shape and pattern is evident in his work, which layers so naturally in his sculptural medium. Shadows created through the depth of relief can be the focus in low light, or simply a sculptural enhancement when fully illuminated, as is the case with Boileau’s figurative and still life images. In contrast, texture and shadow becomes a more integral aspect of the work when we consider his more abstract pieces of art. Alan credits many gallerists and collectors for a widely fulfilling art career, one that propelled some of the most visually stimulating artworks of its kind. Boileau has created numerous installation pieces for public and corporate spaces and has often shipped his work overseas and throughout North America.
