BiographyBorn and raised in the border city of El Paso, TX, George Rodriguez creates decorative ceramic sculpture addressing his identity and community. Brought up by his mother and four older sisters, George quietly observed the love and hard work needed to maintain his family and community. His art began to manifest as search for his individualized voice. The first in his family to finish college, he received a BFA in ceramics from the University of Texas El Paso then went on to receive an MFA from the University of Washington. His world curiosity grew as a recipient of a Bonderman Travel Fellowship where he traveled the world through most of 2010. This travel continues to have a profound impact on George and has helped his community grow. George was recognized as an Emerging Artist in 2019 by the National Council on the Education of Ceramic Arts (NCECA) and the Museums of Northwest Art awarded him The Patti Warashina Luminary Award in 2017. His work can be found in the permanent collection of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago and the Hallie Ford Museum in Salem, OR. George is is the Artist in Residence at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia.Recent Shows and/or Exhibitions2025‘CLAP CLAP Clap Clap Clap clap clap clap clap DOG SHOW!,’ Foster/White Gallery, Seattle, WA2024‘Los Personajes,’ Sisson Gallery, Henry Ford College, Dearborn, MI‘NWCraft24,’ Shack Art Center, Everett, WA‘Earth & Fire 2024: A National Ceramic Art Exhibition,’ Stifel Fine Arts Center, Wheeling, WV‘Elements: Air,’ Foster/White Gallery, Seattle, WA2023‘Shapeshifters,’ Light Art Space Gallery, Silver City, NM‘In Unison,’ Philadelphia Magic Gardens, Philadelphia, PA‘Ritual Vessels,’ Foster/White Gallery, Seattle, WA‘El Zodíaco Familiar,’ San Juan Islands Museum of Art, Friday Harbor, WASmall Works,’ Foster/White Gallery, Seattle, WA‘Grace,’ Light Art Space, Silver City Clay Festival, Silver City, NM‘Beauty and the Unexpected,’ National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden2022‘El Zodíaco Familiar,’ Sarah Spurgeon Gallery, Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA‘Belonging,’ Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA‘Not Your Average Bear,’ Visions West Contemporary, Denver, CO‘Body Image,’ E Street Gallery, Sacramento, CA‘Beauty and the Beast,’ Blue Spiral 1, Asheville, NC2021‘El Zodíaco Familiar,’ Whatcom Museum, Bellingham, WA2020'La Flor, El Nicho, y sus Memorias,’ Bonovitz Gallery, The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA‘Urban Guardians,’ Foster/White Gallery, Seattle, WA‘Día de Muertos- A Time to Grieve and Remember,’ National Museum ofMexican Art, Chicago, IL‘Las Aves: Birds in the Art of and Inspired by Mexico,’ Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art,Salisbury, MD‘Hopefully Tomorrow,’ Brockway Center for Arts and Technology, Brockway, PA2020'We are Clay,’ Baltimore Clayworks, Baltimore, MD‘Democracy 2020: Craft & the Election,’ Craft in America Center, Los Angeles, CA‘The Clay Studio National 2020,’ The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA‘Reflections,’ Kirkland Arts Center, Kirkland, WA
