Jamie Bradbury has worked in Drawing and Painting for the past 15 years, and engaged in a multi-disciplinary practice in the fields of visual arts, music, and independent research creation. Originally from Toronto, Canada, he now lives and works between St. John’s and Burgeo, Newfoundland. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Painting at OCAD University 2006, and Master’s degree from Central Saint Martins in London U.K, in 2010. His works explore identity, situating auto-biographical narratives within collective histories. Blending both personal and found source material together, he attempts to complicate where the personal begins, and the collective ends. In his new series of works entitled ‘No Great Future’ Jamie explores the relationship between identity formation and land. Acting as a witness to change, the representations of land, sea, and surrounding environments frame the meaning of ‘home’ as something both in flux, and yet very concrete. This work examines the question of how one repositions a sense of self when the roots that form identity no longer exist? Jamie’s works have been exhibited throughout North America, and Europe, most recently at the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art in Conwy. Previous exhibitions include Arte Fiera Bologna, Santorini Biennale, AACDD Festival London, Art Toronto, and AQUA Miami. He’s appeared in publications such as Canadian Art, Voir Magazine, CBC news, and Garageland; first coming to national prominence in Canada, participating on the T.V programme Star portraits, painting Canadian TV Icon Debbie Travis. His works are held in private and public collections such as the Portrait Gallery of Canada, Debbie Moore O.B.E, and the ALDO collection. In 2014, Jamie became involved in a collaborative Dance/Soundscape project with choreographer Marissa Wong. They have presented works together at The Dance centre in Vancouver, 11th Biennial Dance, Safehouse San Francisco, and at TedxSoma in 2020. They recently began a new project at the Lēna residency in Galliano Island, and presented their work at the Dance Deck. Finally, Jamie was recently awarded a Canadian Council of the Arts award for Movement and Sound creation.
