Susan Gunn Art Boxes are small worlds of vintage and found objects that can be playful, quirky, and mysterious. They are created with things from attics, basements, family photo albums, junk drawers, and workbenches. Well-worn toys, photos, artisan tools, and elements of everyday workers find a new beginning. They represent a function well served, no longer needed for that purpose. Instead of being discarded, they find a place of honor partnered with other found objects for a new perspective. Juxtaposing disparate elements to make a connection with each other and engage the viewer, Susan relies on imagination, love of what they represented, and fondness for detail, balance, and design. She was originally inspired by the renowned artist Joseph Cornell, who pioneered assemblage in simple shadowboxes, and her late father, who rebuilt clocks and antique furniture with precision and respect.
