Somosi’s “Fantastic Regular” series is an exploration of time, where multiple views of one location merge into a single frame. Light is refracted into color forms, and growth happens on a macro scale superimposed onto a lush, photo-collaged nature-scape. This work translates a metamorphosis in nature that the human eye can perceive. Through these landscape images, the artist explores the idea of a “beautiful” change in nature, especially as it relates to the body and a generational life span.Complementing these works are an assortment of Somosi’s upcycled photographic images made with repurposed test prints – a practice extending from the notion that “that there are no mistakes in art, only learning opportunities.” In many of these landscape-based artworks, Somosi incorporates embroidery using thread that is toned with organic materials from the environment she has chosen to depict. “My relationship with the photographic image continues to challenge and intrigue me, and my desire to push what a photograph can be is evident in these bodies of work,” says Somosi. “Through these explorations, I am continuously redefining the boundaries of photography, blending it with other mediums to create something new and deeply personal.”Dora Somosi is a Hungarian-American lens-based artist living and working in Brooklyn and upstate New York. Her work has been shown widely at such venues as Klompching Gallery, The Sarah Shepard Gallery, Carrie Haddad Gallery, The International Center of Photography (ICP), Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Penumbra Foundation, Bolinas Art Museum, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her photographs have been published in The Atlantic, The New York Times, T Magazine, and elsewhere. Somosi’s works are part of collections of notable New York and Los Angeles collectors and interior designers, including Trustees of the Brooklyn Museum, BRiC Arts, and the Brooklyn International Studio and Curatorial Program.
