Greg Day is a Maine-based artist and self-described “builder of paintings” whose work explores space, structure, and abstraction. Drawing on his background in architecture and engineering, Greg constructs large-scale modular paintings that combine rigorous design with intuitive process. “I would spread out huge sheets of paper and draw imaginary cities,” he recalls of his childhood in Brooks, Maine. “The lines would go right off the page—as if they could go on forever.” Born in Brunswick, Maine, Greg studied architecture at the University of Kansas, earning degrees in both architecture and engineering. He later lived and worked in New York City, England, and Prague—experiences that helped shape his distinctive visual language. His early career included work in architecture and lighting design, along with a Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Grant to support his artistic development. Today, Greg frequently works in acrylic or acrylic and epoxy resin on wood panel, creating 12x16-inch segments that he bolts together into expansive wall-mounted works. Each piece begins with a grid designed in CAD software, serving as a scaffold for layered color, gesture, and texture. “I like to sand, wipe, and rework,” he says. “It’s not about perfection—it’s about building something that feels alive.” Greg’s materials range widely. He often combines acrylic, polymer, and epoxy resin on panel but also explores mixed media, oil, lacquer, and digital processes—along with occasional works on zinc panel, linen, and paper. This range allows him to experiment with surface tension, transparency, and tactile contrast. He draws inspiration from the visual diversity of rural Maine, the Midwest, and urban life. Space, light, and the interplay of foreground and background are recurring themes. His compositions evoke both minimal abstraction and unknowable spatial depths—inviting viewers to interpret the work through their own lived experiences. Greg has exhibited in Maine, Boston, New York, England, and the Czech Republic, and his work is held in collections across the U.S. and Europe. He now lives and works in Bath, Maine. Learn more about Greg’s creative evolution and inspirations on Radio Maine.
