Nebraska native Patricia Scarborough has focused on painting the shapes and shadows of the Midwest since she wound her way through Kearney State College, graduating eventually with a degree in Fine Art. Her attraction has always been to the way contours and form morph into new identities when color and context are changed. This includes not only the immense skies that stretch over her home state, but also the small clustered spaces below. Scarborough works from her home studio, making regular forays into the countryside near her home in Geneva in pursuit of an understanding of her place in this rural environment. "I am unapologetically in love with the landscape. This appreciation has fueled my work for decades. Two years ago, experiencing the cultural and personal upheavals of a pandemic as well as other life changes, I felt a pull to leave the grand skies and tree lines and acknowledge the subtle, oceanic movement of grasses, and the shadows that stain the surface of prairies and meadows. There was a need to acknowledge a tenuous life cycle, yet one with deep roots that would ensure the cycle would continue. Sensitivity to themes of regeneration, loss, patience and strength formed as I watched these movements and brought them to my easel. The work I am sharing with you represents both my love of the grand views of the Great Plains, and also this more intimate understanding of the rich simplicity of life." -Patricia Scarborough
