While yet in high school, Robert Madvin was introduced to art glass by his older brother Andrew, a successful glass artist. Robert studied glass at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit, MI, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, HI. During his undergraduate work at the college, Robert and brother Andrew opened their own glass studio at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit, MI. Robert blows glass and develops his work in the same studio space today. His inspiration derives from nature – natural elements, textures, and colors encountered in travels and day-to-day endeavors. During his studies in Hawaii, Robert developed his prominent “Pohacu” glass sculpture series. Pohacu, meaning rock or stone, were stacked up by ancient Hawaiians. These “rock sculptures” became navigational instruments throughout the islands. Robert encountered such organic signposts while hiking the trails in Hawaii. He developed them into his distinctive glass stacked stone sculptures that are shown at prestigious galleries and art shows throughout North America. Robert still resides in Michigan, where he develops his passion for the fluid-solid art form that is glass.
