Veronica Davila née Kallqvist is a contemporary water colorist who lives and works in the Charlotte area. Her distinctive realistic style presents images from family photo albums, primarily from slides, whose subjects and compositions should not be forgotten. The retro nostalgia is both amusing and often show a side of family that is both humorous and dark, and always loving. The automatic re-dos that we get from digital is not there, so subjects and compositions stay true. The vast collection of slides, in the thousands, from the 1940’s to the late 1980’s had been a hidden treasure waiting to be reintroduced. Veronica also paints small still lifes from personal objects and fabrics, which are all gifted or inherited, in unlikely groupings or angles. Quirky gifts from close friends make an appearance alongside Swedish antiques handed down from family members from back home. Born in Sweden where a lot of time was spent painting with the tutelage of her maternal grandfather, Georg, whose loose documentary style of painting influenced her a great deal. Making the personal ordinary extraordinary as a historical recording. Georg had a great love of family history and researched his own to great extent. Along with his findings are illustrations of ordinary, memorable objects, like rotary phones and interiors of relatives houses, Veronica moved to the states with her family in the mid 80s. She received a bachelors degree in fine art with a concentration in sculpture from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has worked in the visual art field for the past 20+ years. She lives with her husband and teenage son in Matthews.
