While inspirited by a sense of nostalgia, Zephaniah Lukamba inquires into the relationship between the personal identity and the inextricable discourses of society. Lukamba’s compositional tendencies have a quality to evoke a sense of deja vous in its viewers. He expresses an unspoken dialogue with color, resulting in recognisable moods. While all these moods contrast drastically, they all share similar paradoxes and most importantly a sense of quiet of the night despite chaos. Lukamba endeavours to express himself on canvas through a playful use of oil paints and tools letting its starkness be tempered by textures and materiality in an almost ritualistic way. His present paintings depict the allure of the night, the sparkly stars twinkling in the sky, vehicles and figures illuminated by the artificial outdoor lighting and in the distance the moonlight. Lukamba contrasts bright and warm colours with dark hues, and a bustling foreground with moving vehicles and figures seemingly in a haste to retire home. In the last five years, Lukamba has been privileged to exhibit at the National Museumin a ha of Kenya (since 2016), Kenya Art Fair (2017), McKinsey Mtaani exhibition (2017 & 2018), Manjano exhibition (2020), Sztuki Schowek gallery in Poland (2021), One Off Gallery (2020-2022) among others. Lukamba’s work has also been awarded 2nd place, in an African ‘Art meets Science’ competition organised by SANTHE group in South Africa. Currently, he is pursuing a Masters in Fine Art and Design at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya.
