Larry Silver is a self-taught artist born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama who now creates out of his studio in Birmingham, Alabama. Known for his striking and thought provoking works in oils and charcoal, Larry uses art to communicate messages and ideas to the world about race, humanity, purpose, and love. His artistic journey first began after he discovered a drawing of an African-American woman with natural hair and an afro pick on a wall in his home as a child. He immediately asked his mother where the drawing came from. A flame was immediately ignited when he learned that the painting was actually created by his mother who at the time was an elementary school teacher. Over time Larry would learn that her dream of being an artist had been deferred as a result of the challenges of life, a reality that would inspire him to pick up her torch and reignite it's flame by exploring & ultimately embracing the artistic gifts he had inherited from her. Each day after school, Larry would create drawings in the lobby of an insurance company where his mother worked part-time. With nothing to do but sit quietly in a lobby to the sounds of elevator jazz, Larry would make his way to neighboring cubicles where paper, pens, and pencils could be found. He would recreate images he discovered in cubicles including family photos and pages from magazines, while his mother worked to clean the office building. It would not be until after high-school that Larry would fully embrace pursuing a career as an artist. Today at age 31, his work resonates with individual across the globe and is collected by art collectors who treasure the artist and message behind each painting. Larry is represented by Neema Fine Art Gallery, an art gallery and art consultation firm that exclusively represents southern African-American artists. Larry is currently working on an exciting series that explores the significance of hair within the African-American culture. He is set to unveil 3 large editions to this series at Art Basel Week Miami 2022.
