Karima Muyaes (b. 1960, Mexico City) is an established painter and printmaker who is constantly exploring the universe of symbolic and mystical forms. Her work draws primitive symbols, glyphs, codices and lexicons from pre-Hispanic, African, and Arab cultures. She combines these elements with other contemporary forms to create figures, characters, and objects that narrate fictional stories about nature, creation, shamans, and feminism - to name a few. Muyaes also incorporates the four classical elements (earth, water, wind, and fire) through the presence of earth tones in her paintings and prints. Muyaes’ formal education began at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), continued at the School of Fine Art at the Universidad de la Americas in Mexico City, and concluded at the School of Art in Toronto, where she specialized in printmaking. Since 1981, Muyaes has exhibited her work in more than 30 solo shows in galleries and museums and over 50 group shows in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico. She lives and works in Mexico City and the city of Oaxaca, Mexico.
