ARTISTS STATEMENT Roni Feldman views art as an act of contemplative discovery, likebeing an explorer or treasure hunter, except the riches lie inunexpected meaning and beautiful form. His paintings inviteviewers to spend time with them- to move about, look closely, andbecome active visual explores themselves. These paintings are made entirely with white paint. They can bevery subtle from some angles, but they come alive with light as itrefracts over the varying matte and iridescent surfaces. As onemoves in front of them, or sunlight changes the lighting in the room, the paintings vacillate between abstraction and representation, revealing scenes of liquidtransformation: great waves, stormy clouds, avalanches, and billowing geysers. The imagery isgrand and often full of movement and energy, but the luminescence, softly painted edges, andshifting iridescence primarily conveys a serene quality. Feldman is fascinated by the history of white-on-white paintings and how white light ismade from all the colors of the spectrum. It is everything and nothing all at once. He makesthese paintings by airbrushing white paint on a silvery background. To see them in theirentirety takes time. Day or night, these paintings always have something to be discovered. Inraking sunlight they can feel bright and shimmering and at night they may take on a warm glowfrom incandescent lights. Their mood is always changing, inviting reinvestigation, discovery, and comfort with change. ABOUT Roni Feldman holds an M.F.A. in Painting from the Claremont Graduate University.
