Gaither Pope is from Jackson, Mississippi where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Tougaloo College in 1992. In 1995, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. In 1996, he was employed with East Baton Rouge Parish Schools’ Talented Art Program until 1997, when he returned to LSU as an adjunct to the art faculty. At LSU, Pope taught courses in drawing, painting, and design until 2006. In fall 2006, Pope joined the faculty at Nicholls State, where he is currently an associate professor teaching drawing and painting. Over the past twenty years, Pope has exhibited both nationally and statewide in a number of venues. In Louisiana, his work has been featured at the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum, and at the Shaw Center for the Arts, Baton Rouge. His work has appeared in a number of publications including New American Paintings, the Cincinnati Review, the New Orleans Art Review, Louisiana Life Magazine, and in online publications such as Arizona State University’s Superstition Review, and the magazine for contemporary design, Polkadot. His work is included in A Unique Slant of Light: Louisiana Landscapes, (Louisiana Endowment for Humanities, 2011), and Expressions of Place: South Louisiana Landscapes, (John Kemp, Mississippi University Press, 2016.)
