Barbara Brainard reinvents images by combining traditional etching materials with a variety of drawing techniques.First collected as photographs, then drawn directly onto a plate, the monotypes are narrative landscapes of shifting layers and gritty textures. These are images unique to Brainard and evoke a personal view of her adopted city. Before moving to New Orleans in 1981, Brainard did coursework at Rice University and Marymount Manhattan and completed her BFA at Newcomb and MFA at Tulane University. Her thirty-year stint as assistant professor at Loyola University New Orleans left a loyal following of inspired students.Brainard is a recipient of two Pollock/Krasner Foundation Grants and a Louisiana Division of the Arts Individual Artists Fellowship among many other awards. Her paintings and monotypes are in permanent collections including New Orleans Museum of Art, Springfield Art Museum, Rutgers University, Bloomberg University.
