JA. Vigil (b. 1948, Jemez Pueblo, NM) has lived in his ancestral village of Jemez Pueblo for most of his life. Raised in a multi-generational household, he was immersed in the traditions, language, and daily rhythms of Pueblo life. His deep connection to family, land, and culture forms the foundation of his artistic voice. Vigil began his sculptural journey in 1987 through an apprenticeship with longtime friend and master sculptor Cliff Fragua. During this formative period, he discovered his natural gift for stone carving and began developing a style uniquely his own—grounded in tradition, yet expressed with individuality and quiet strength. Working in alabaster, steatite, marble, and other natural stones, Vigil brings to life the stories, emotions, and spirit of his community. His sculptures serve as intimate reflections of his personal experiences and cultural identity. Many of his original stone works have been cast in bronze, with each edition finished in custom patinas that enhance texture and tone, making every piece distinct. For Vigil, carving remains a joyful and evolving practice. His work has received numerous awards and continues to resonate with collectors drawn to the authenticity, depth, and heart embedded in each sculpture.
