Joel Perlman’s contemporary metal sculptures pulse with motion and an angular, enigmatic energy. Influenced by the Russian avant-garde and Constructivist movements, Perlman’s geometric abstractions buzz with adventure and spontaneity – recalling the metallic beauty of the Machine Age while advancing the possibilities of contemporary three-dimensional art. A long-standing interest in architecture has imbued his work with a distinctive structural integrity, and the artist is fascinated by the unique relationships his sculptures forge with the environments in which they are exhibited. Although his body of work is ever-evolving, the artist’s characteristically industrial, energetic style is thematically consistent and immediately recognizable throughout the course of his established career. Joel Perlman’s expansive and dynamic body of work ensures his enduring stature and increasing influence in the world of contemporary art. Earning a BFA from Cornell University in 1965 and an MA from the University of California, Berkeley in 1967, Perlman has maintained a rigorously unique artistic career since his first one-man show in 1973. The artist’s sculptures are held in prominent museums in America and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C.; the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY; and the Utsukushi-Ga-Hara Open Air Museum in Nagano, Japan. In addition to a Guggenheim fellowship, Perlman is the recipient of such significant awards and appointments as a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, the Special Prize from the second Fujisankei Biennale, and the commission for the Tenneco World Headquarters in Japan.
