Jeffrey Donovan was born in Delaware and raised in a military family where travel was mandatory. He attended Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, from 1975 to 1977, but dropped out during the second year and moved to Columbia, SC. Jeffrey started working in set design and construction for video and theater production in 1992, all the while painting and drawing on evenings and weekends. In 1994, Jeffrey started painting and made the bold move of showing work in galleries around town. In 1997, he rented his first studio space. In 1999, he was employed with regular business hours, which proved to be a real boon to his art productivity. In 2004, he began learning the vagaries of clay and in 2005 attended a two month program in figurative ceramics at the Penland School of Craft in Penland, NC. In 2007, he rented studio space in the Vista Studios in downtown Columbia, where he did ceramic sculpture and paintings in various media until 2013. Currently, he works in a home studio. Artist Statement: Like the media used - or possibly due to them - this image is very opaque. I'm still not sure if the head is turning toward the viewer, or away from them. Or is the figure shaking his head to say, "No", possibly in anticipation of the soon to be asked question "What are you digging for?” Personally, I suspect he's digging for fire, which is likely due to that being one of my favorite songs by the band The Pixies.
