Ibrahim H. Bamidele is a Nigerian visual storyteller and multimedia artist whose practice spans photography and painting. Deeply rooted in his immediate environment and personal experiences, his work is driven by rigorous research and bold experimentation. Through striking compositions, Bamidele interrogates political, religious, and societal dynamics, offering layered narratives that challenge perception and provoke critical reflection. Renowned for the remarkable beauty, precision, and intricacy of his works, Bamidele demonstrates an extraordinary command of detail and composition. His pieces are meticulously constructed, each element thoughtfully layered to create visually arresting and emotionally resonant images. This exceptional level of craftsmanship, combined with the depth of his conceptual inquiry, positions him as a rare, once-in-a-generation talent emerging from Lagos, whose work resonates powerfully on both local and global stages. Central to Bamidele’s practice is his sustained research into women and their roles in Nigerian history and contemporary society, examining how gendered narratives are constructed, preserved, and contested. He also engages in important work around albinism in Nigerian communities, placing individuals with albinism at the centre of his visual narratives. His work explores how these communities have been perceived and treated across pre-colonial and present-day Nigeria, confronting stigma while restoring visibility, dignity, and agency. A defining feature of his practice is his extensive research into textiles and fabrics as cultural and historical signifiers. Bamidele investigates the role of textiles in Nigerian societies, particularly their importance in ceremonies, identity formation, and social status, while critically examining their global entanglements. His work highlights the paradox whereby fabrics widely perceived as “African,” such as Ankara, are often manufactured in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, revealing complex histories of trade, colonialism, and cultural exchange. Visually, Bamidele’s paintings are distinguished by their dynamic layering of Ankara fabrics, newsprint, and richly rendered dark skin tones, creating a compelling fusion of traditional materials and contemporary techniques. This interplay of texture and symbolism reinforces the conceptual depth of his work, bridging material culture with socio-political inquiry. Bamidele has exhibited widely in both local and international contexts, with a growing presence across leading art fairs and institutional platforms. Following earlier group exhibitions such as Form Féminée at Thought Pyramid, Lagos (2019), Bridges to the West at Art Times Gallery, United Kingdom (2020), and A Roomful of Stories at Kokopelli Gallery, Lagos (2021), his international trajectory has continued to expand significantly. In 2023, he was presented at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair London, followed by participation at 1-54 New York 2024 and 1-54 New York 2025 with The Southern Art Hub (then The African Art Hub). In 2025, he was further featured in a solo presentation at Africa Basel with The Southern Art Hub, marking a key milestone in his career. His work was also included in Threads of Resilience and Renewal (2024), and continued his international visibility through participation in Black-Owned Galleries Now (2026) with The Southern Art Hub. His works are held in significant public and private collections worldwide, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and in the private collection of acclaimed filmmaker Lee Daniels, alongside notable collections across Switzerland, the United States, Nigeria, the Netherlands, and other international contexts.
