Damon Hyldreth’s approach is intuitive and process-driven rather than having preconceived ideas. His process in sculpture is a process of discovery through making. He has a conversation with his materials, luring out of them the dynamic forces of nature. Hyldreth allows the work to evolve, probing shapes, investigating its capacity to change. He seeks to reveal the nature of the material, allowing it to take on a life of its own. Hyldreth’s work stands as a reminder of the connection between man and nature as the world around us becomes increasingly removed from this essential and most basic union. While the metals he uses are clearly man-made, the result of his collaboration with them is a blurring of the divide between nature and structure, space and form. His sculptures embody the tension between stasis and impending movement; despite its weight and volume, or perhaps because of it, metal can dance and even suggest song. Ideally a viewer engages with his work on a subliminal level enabling them to have an experience of a uniquely personal nature. Hyldreth works with stainless steel, bronze, Corten steel, and carbon steel. These diverse metals - with their varied looks - suggest forms individualistically. Damon Hyldreth’s work has been shown in exhibits and collections around the continental US, such as the Atlantic Richfield Corporation in LA, the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco, the Intercontinental Boston, the Royal Scandinavian Inn in Solvang, CA, Nucor Steel Corporation in Charlotte, NC, the Tampa Town Center in FL, the Sheraton Scottsdale in AZ, and the Sheraton Silver City in Arlington, VA. Hyldreth has also reached international acclaim, with works in collections such as the Nation Towers in Abu Dhabi UAE, the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London, the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin, and has done work for Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan.
