During his 26 years working as a jewelry designer and engraver in Honolulu, Joe Pimental always kept sketching and painting, just as he had since he was a young boy in Pauoa. While at H.F. Wichman & Co. in Waikīkī, he would go down to the Ala Wai during lunch hour to sketch what he saw.In 1978, when he was 62, Joe began painting full-time. The sketches from years earlier became the studies for many of his watercolors, including the Honolulu Stadium paintings, "Ala Wai Boat Ride," and "The 50th State Fair at Magic Island.""These are places that are gone from Hawaiʻi, but not from the hearts of those of us who grew up here," says Joe. "I just wanted to help keep some memories alive."
