OIL ON CANVAS 1941-2021 Nicholas Bott is known for his brightly coloured, post-impressionistic take on Canadian landscape painting. Informed by an early admiration for Dutch painting, such as Vincent van Gogh, and later, the Group of Seven, Bott’s strong outlines, thick brush-strokes and vibrant palette capture the energy and essence of the Canadian mountains, forest and coastline. Born in Blokker, Netherlands in 1941, Bott moved to Canada at the age of 17, settling in Smithers, British Columbia where he became enamoured with the surrounding landscape. An avid outdoorsman, Bott seeks out his often remote subjects by hiking, and sometimes by helicopter. Bott studied art at both the University of British Columbia and the Chicago School of Art. His work is held in public and private collections both in Canada and internationally.
