Spencer Hansen graduated from San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. He is an interdisciplinary artist whose imagination and intellect intertwine to create playful art, which is thoughtfully sourced, designed and constructed. Hansen resides in Bali where he constructed his art studio, and became heavily intertwined into the Indonesian culture. It is in Bali where he sources the majority of his materials, and where he practices with local craftsmen to perfect his layered compositions. Hansen works primarily with natural materials to hand-make detailed art, acting as an antithesis of our disposable culture. Endlessly experimenting with processes and fueled by curiosity, his work flirts with the relationship between light, time, texture, weight and form. The resulting story often reveals a transformation of a common object into abstraction, undeniably familiar, and yet simultaneously foreign. Hansen encourages viewers to form their own relationship with his artworks, which at their core are a reflection of his limitless imagination.
