ALAN FISHMAN (American b. 1942-)Painter As curator Suzette McAvoy wrote: "Never a literalist in his works, Fishman paints from remembered images rather than direct observation, endeavoring to create “musical equivalents” for experiences that he has felt, imagined, and seen." Fishman traces his artistic roots to Europe, where he spent many years living and teaching in Italy. Reviewer Philip Isaacson has written of Fishman’s work, saying that “he paints the moment rather than the fact.” Fishman’s lyrical paintings reflect his many passions and pursuits from his interest in landscape and seascape to decades of fascination with age-old tradition of art inspired by ancient myth, where the consequences of choice and will are dramatic, crucial and often devastating. Expressing a love of color, texture, and form, as well as a rapt attention to and delight in the natural world, his works are spirited additions to the long tradition of Maine painting. Born and raised in New York City, Alan Fishman has been an artist for more than fifty years. He received a BFA from Cornell University, with further study and years of residence in Italy. Fishman's works are continually exhibited in group and solo exhibitions, and can be found in many collections around the world. Exhibitions of note: University of Virginia, Bronx Museum of Art, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Maine Jewish Museum, as well as many solo shows in galleries in Maine. For five years, Fishman worked on cruise ships around the world, lecturing on art history and creating a series of more than 300 paintings focused on the sea. Sixty of those paintings were selected for the 2018 Biennial exhibition at the Center for Maine Contemporary ArtArtist statement The Intertidal Series:Having lived in Maine as an artist for the past 26 years, a significant part of my work has been directed toward painting the landscape and sea, during all four seasons. The series I've submitted is devoted to the space between sea and land, between high and low tide: The Intertidal Zone. Observing tide pools, watching the sea ebb and flow fascinates me, and my paintings are meant to evoke the beauty of these potent places. They are not meant to be literal representations, but rather evocative of the visual complexity of these unique environments. A Professor Emeritus of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Alan Fishman was also the Founding Director of Polimoda school of fashion and design in Florence, Italy.
