Paul Claude Gardère was born in 1944 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and passed away in 2011 in New York City. His work, deeply influenced by his Haitian roots, is also shaped by modern trends, as noted by art critic Gerald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens. His art has been showcased widely across the United States, including prominent venues such as the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Figge Art Museum, Lehigh University, the Pomona College Museum of Art, and the Jersey City Museum. Gardère’s pieces are part of significant collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Brooklyn Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Figge Art Museum, the Columbus Museum, Yale University’s Beinecke Library, and Cornell University’s Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art. His contributions to the art world have left a significant legacy and continue to influence discussions on cultural identity and history.
