Victor Bokas: An Artistic Journey Rooted in Florida’s Scenic Beauty Born and raised in the Florida Panhandle, Victor Bokas has long been influenced by the tropical landscapes, colorful beaches, and sun-soaked atmosphere of his home state. These vibrant, sunny elements are prominent throughout his paintings, characterized by an abstract style brimming with tropical icons, bold hues, and a whimsical touch. Since moving to Orlando in 1987, Bokas has infused his work with the region's energy, creating pieces that radiate fun and sunshine. “The tropical landscapes and beautiful sunsets always inspire my colors and paintings,” Bokas explains. A Signature Style of Patterns and Playfulness One of the hallmarks of Bokas' work is his energetic, busy compositions that offer a unique balance of excitement and calm. His paintings incorporate adventurous patterns, bold colors, and varied mark-making, creating a dynamic interplay of shapes and lines. “My work is still very colorful,” Bokas notes, “and always exploring new themes. Florals and abstracts are still a favorite.” While his pieces often feel like a celebration, reminiscent of a carnival or dance, Bokas also builds in a sense of control and harmony through the use of a grid. This guiding structure ensures that viewers can explore his vibrant compositions without losing their way. Blurring the Line Between Art and Design With a background in graphic design, Bokas masterfully blends both art and structure. His career spans nine years as Senior Art Director for Sea World and 20 years at Tupperware Brands. His work also extends to large-scale installations, such as the 15-foot x 85-foot mosaic floor he designed for Orlando International Airport’s “A” Terminal, created in collaboration with Italian masters of natural stone and glazed enamel. Another notable piece is his wall installation at the airport's “C” Terminal, reflecting the artist's ability to create joy-filled images that can be experienced on both an intimate and grand scale. An Evolving Process of Experimentation Over the years, Bokas' creative process has become increasingly experimental. “Maybe more experimental,” he muses about his recent evolution. “New tools: Gel Prints and collaging into paintings plus more hours in the studio painting.” This experimental nature reflects in his latest works, which incorporate layers of collage and gel prints, adding texture and depth to his colorful canvases. Despite these innovations, Bokas’ central focus remains creating images that bring happiness and joy to both himself and his viewers. Inspired by Nature, Travel, and Everyday Beauty Bokas draws inspiration from the natural world and his everyday experiences. His perfect day includes "painting in the morning, visiting a museum, having lunch with friends, and maybe a cocktail in the evening," but it's also about walks on the beach, flowers from Trader Joe’s, and artist retreats. These sources of inspiration often manifest in his work through tropical landscapes, beautiful sunsets, and floral themes that have remained staples throughout his career. Looking Forward: What Inspires Victor Bokas in 2024 In 2024, Bokas continues to be inspired by both the familiar and the new. “Walks on the beach, flowers at Trader Joe’s, travel, and artist retreats” serve as his current muses. He emphasizes that while his work remains colorful and energetic, it is evolving to be “a little less busy,” allowing more space for new themes and experimentation to unfold. Through his art, Bokas invites viewers into a world where vibrant colors, playful forms, and tropical landscapes blend seamlessly, offering both a visual feast and a moment of calm reflection. Whether in his abstract paintings or large-scale installations, Bokas' work is a tribute to the beauty and joy found in both nature and everyday life.
