Rock Springs, WI ARTIST STATEMENTA full-time studio potter since 1975, Byers work is characterized by the grace and simplicity of forms and the complexity of the glazes. He is known for his large scale wheel thrown platters and his beautiful copper red glazes. He lives and works in an old brick grade school in the small Wisconsin village of Rock Springs. He throws and trims his pottery in what used to be the gym, and glazes and fires in the cafeteria. "On most of my pieces I spray multiple layers of glaze and ash to convey a sense of balance, timelessness and serenity like lichen on granite." He is heartened by the friends, collectors, and fellow artists who enjoy using his pots every day. BIOGRAPHYByers studied pottery at Cornell University in upstate New York while getting a degree in labor economics but is basically self taught. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show, Racine Art Museum, Phipps Center for the Arts, Hudson, WI, Gallery 110 North, Plymouth, WI, ​Monarch Clay National, Birmingham, AL, ​Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, South Dakota Art Museum, ​ Wayne Center for the Arts, and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI.
