Indian, b. 1973 Rajive Anand is an Indian-American artist seeking to combine his South Asian traditions with American sensibilities. Through his paintings and drawings, the artist set out to highlight the spiritual aspects of his Indian heritage and elevate them to the fore of popular culture. Anand, then 12 years old, was inspired to develop and design Laserman, his first comic book superhero, after a chance encounter with Will Eisner in 1985. Rajive Anand is a Rhode Island School of Design and Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts alumnus with a MFA in Painting. Anand has drawn inspiration from Rajput miniatures, Khon masks, Tibetan Thangka paintings, Tantric art, and other ancient Eastern contemplative art forms through his work with Indian and Thai masters. High contrast, vibrant hues, and aggressive imagery captivate the eye in his compelling compositions, which are founded on mathematical concepts. Invoking meditative aspects that seek to connect with the audience and provoke them to reflect on a visual, emotional, and intellectual level, Anand's work is the product of a tireless quest for freedom.
