Evan Boggess is a native West Virginian artist who works in the eastern panhandle of the state. His work is widely shown with recent solo or group exhibitions in Miami, Baltimore, Chicago, Arlington, Cincinnati, Raleigh, Scranton, and locations all over WV. Evan Boggess received his Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Marywood University in Scranton, PA in 2006. In 2005 Boggess co-founded the Test Pattern Art Space of Scranton and was a gallery manager there until 2007. He later attended the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2011. During his first year there, he was nominated to represent MICA at the NEXT Juried Exhibition at the ARTChicago Fair. Boggess went on to be nominated by MICA for consideration in several other opportunities, including the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship. He is also an alumnus of the 2011 Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Artist Statement Pressure, heat, and time are some of the conditions that shape earth’s metamorphic minerals. They are also some of the conditions that guide the development of my abstractions. I excavate pressure, heat, and time out of the context of mineralogy and translate them into the language of painting. Pressure becomes the illusory depth in the pictorial space. Heat becomes a property of color, and time becomes the gradual accumulation of paint on a surface. The layers of imagery for each of my paintings are derived from the growth patterns of actual mineral specimens and the mining processes used to extract them. I use paint to investigate mineralogy because I appreciate the intrinsic connection between the two. Many of the minerals from which I work also appear in the list of ingredients on tubes of paint. Moreover, the distortive qualities of the crystalline formations translate well into the medium of paint, which has its own powers of spatial play.
