"My paintings are expressions of the world I inhabit, using a medium I enjoy immensely. The commercialized world, politics, and counter cultures are all fodder for imagery and storytelling. I create work that reflects current social trends – from Facebook to zombie parades. My gestural approach to the paint lends itself to visceral and colorful subject matter – like female wrestlers and mass-produced objects. The paintings, in oil on canvas, are created in fluid layers, with fragments of under painting showing through the finished surface, figures painted just enough to catch the essential gesture, character and movement. They explore spaces occupied by almost-formed narratives and the awkward uncertainties of in-betweens. The backgrounds and foregrounds shift energetically as paint fields overlap at the edges of a form, resolving into a kind of illustrative expressionism. I live in Asheville, NC but started exhibiting paintings in 2002 while living in Seattle, WA. In 2008 I received a Regional Artist Project Grant from the Asheville Area Arts Council, and was awarded an artist residency with the Gil Society of Akureyri, Iceland in 2006.
