Luigi Gatti is skilled in combining nineteenth and twentieth century style figurative work, medieval frescos, and images from advertising and illustration. They are accessible works with a nineteenth century folk art feel. His brushstrokes are short, slow and deliberate. They are carefully planned and meticulously executed. In the style of Italian masters works, Gigi outlines his subjects, but in a more subtle way – he strives to gently separate his subjects from their environment, which they seem to blend right into like faded comic strips. His influences range from Caravaggio, Giotto, Mantegna, and Velazquez to Balthus and Hopper. The works depict personal stories where children are often playing alone or with their pets. The light is usually low, either dawn or dusk in feel, and the mood can be described as contemplative, quiet and perhaps even melancholic or somber. Gigi’s poetic expressionis centered in human solitude and the mysterious charm of existence.Gatti was born in Gazzola (Piacenza) Italy in 1955, and continues to live and paint there. After a degree in urban design, he was called to pursue a serious career in painting. He made his debut in 1993 in a collective exhibition at the beloved Protestant Church on Solferino Street in Milan. His first solo exhibition was in 2004 at Donec Capiam Studio Gallery, on del Carmine Street in Milan, which sparked a subsequent solo show at the stunning Il Lepre Art Gallery in Piacenza, in 2012. He made his U.S. debut in New York in the same year, with great success and much praise. Gigi has exhibited in the US at Carver Hill Gallery since 2012. He also continues to show internationally and has built a strong career and reputation with many collectors.
