After a career as a successful brand and marketing executive in the northeast and mid-Atlantic,Henry Callahan returned to painting full time and now lives and works in metro Atlanta, GA. Hisabstract paintings are dramatic and vibrant and exhibit simple, yet complex forms.Henry continually pushes the elements in his process, creating and exploring new ways ofexpression, while embracing the notion of action and color fields as primary carriers of emotionand intellect. Whereas the Abstract Expressionists saw painting as a huge dominant theatreunto itself, his work holds to the idea that a painting works best with the elements of a personalspace when intimate and peaceful.He has remained committed to a focus on color combinations, painterly applications, and boldgestures. He uses paint and surface to further a Zen-like philosophy and a connection to nature.With a consistent body of work that progresses through several decades, his approach speaksto a sincere belief in the power of intuition and empathy.Callahan is currently represented by The Haen Gallery in Asheville, NC and Reinike Gallery inAtlanta, GA, and his work is in private collections worldwide. Henry is a Georgia native whostudied painting at Auburn University and Maryland Institute College of Art. STATEMENTMy work is about color and form and the interaction of the two. Inspiration for this work comesfrom nature. Light and shadow transform color and shape to impart beauty, depth and feelingsof hope. Intuition informs the canvases in these heavily painted surfaces, built upon many layersof acrylic paint and gloss varnish. The layers continue to build until the surfaces are rich andflashes of color peak through.
