Born on October 3rd, 1927 in Ikerrasak camp, South Baffin Island, NWT, and passed on January 8th, 2013, Kenojuak Ashevak, C.C., ONu is one of modern Inuit art's most celebrated leading figures. Gathering many achievements, she won the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2008) and the Order of Nunavut (2012), and is the first Inuit artist on Canada's Walk of Fame (2001). Having received Honorary Doctorates from both Queen's University (1991), and the University of Toronto (1992), Ashevak has also been featured in a National Film Board documentary film (1963) and a limited-edition book entitled Graphic Arts of the Inuit: Kenojuak (1981). Ashevak practiced Inuit printmaking techniques and founded the West Baffin Co-operative, using simple, bold forms with mediums such as graphite, coloured pencils felt-tip pens, and sometimes poster paints, watercolours or acrylics. Her works have been used for Canadian memorabilia, such as her piece The Enchanted Owl (1960) which was used as the 1970 Canadian stamp to commemorate the Northwest Territories, and the commemorative ten dollar bill in 2017 featuring her print Owl's Bouquet (2007).
