Born in Vienna in 1955, Lalouschek moved to London in 1974 to study the City and Guilds of London Art School. She went on to graduate with an MA from the Royal College of Art in 1983. Lalouschek held her first solo exhibit in the same year at the innovative October Gallery. Lalouschek has won numerous awards including the David Murray Landscape Award, Austrian State Scholarship, British Council Scholarship, the Elizabeth Greenshield Award and the George Rowney Bicentennial Special Award. Elisabeth Lalouschek’s early signature works consisted of monumental figures, superimposed onto a frenzied landscape of architectural forms and dynamic painterly expressions. The bodies, with their archetypal human presence, carried a multitude of references, from Greek mythology to dystopian film. The early 1990’s saw a major shift in Lalouschek’s practice with a focus on abstract compositions. The result being more fluid and reflective work, exploring the making of space and time. Lalouschek is now the Artistic Director at the October Gallery in London. She joined October Gallery in 1987 and has been instrumental in creating a solid foundation for the idea of the Transvangarde, the transcultural avant-garde. Lalouschek has furthered the careers of a range of outstanding artists. She has organised and curated the majority of exhibitions at October Gallery, as well as collaborating on numerous projects nationally and internationally, most notably those promoting contemporary African art.
