Born on April 11, 1945, and passed on June 16, 1990, Louis Comtois was an accomplished Canadian abstract painter from Montreal. He studied classics at Collège de Saint-Laurent in 1964, then attended Montréal’s École des beaux-arts in 1968, and then moved to New York City in 1972 where he remained. He was influenced by a group of artists in Montreal under the name of Plasticiens, particularly under Fernand Leduc. His works have been exhibited internationally, from Paris, New York, and Washington, to Canadian galleries such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal (1975), the Olga Korper Gallery in Toronto (2014), and Le Gallery in Toronto (2015). His works utilizes bright layers of surface paint, with his abstraction taking on new mediums as time progressed. New media include monochromatic paintings on constructed wood, then painted with oil and encaustic.
