Irish-born and now living in Windham, Maine, Christopher O’Connor creates paintings deeply rooted in the beauty of the natural world. Growing up in Dingle, he explored the moss-covered rocks of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way; today, he finds equal inspiration in the stark, angular formations of Maine’s rocky shore. “When I paint the rock formations in Maine, they’re quite different from Ireland,” he says, “but there’s a connection at the same time… I’m remembering myself climbing along those rocks as a kid, picking up sea shells and looking into pools.” His paintings invite viewers to enter through the familiar—rocks, water, coastline—before wandering visually into the abstract shapes, colors, and patterns that lie within.Through his art, Christopher fosters a sense of connection and reverence for nature, highlighting the intricate details and complex patterns that make it so awe-inspiring. Guided by a deep respect for the natural world and a commitment to authenticity, he uses color, light, and texture to evoke both wonder and tranquility, transporting viewers to the moments and places that have inspired him.Largely self-taught, Christopher began his artistic journey through books, later traveling across Europe to see works in person. Influenced by the Impressionists and the methodical approach of Georges Seurat, he developed a process that blends careful mapping with intuitive mark-making. “You’ve got to show up every day,” he reflects, “but you cannot be too serious about it… sometimes you might completely take a pivot and discover something new.”Above all, Christopher’s mission is to create art that not only captures the beauty of nature but encourages others to see it in new and meaningful ways. Whether in his studio, tending his garden, or exploring Maine’s islands, he remains devoted to using art as a tool for inspiration, connection, and positive change. To hear Christopher discuss his artistic journey from Ireland to his adopted home state, watch his full interview on Radio Maine.
