"I create "fantastic" panoramas suggesting the infinity of sky and water by studying the contrasts of light and color at different light intensities. Originally from Quebec city, Yan has collaborated with several companies and artisans in the fieldsof commercial and cultural exhibition, thematic, scenic, theatrical and television decor in Quebec asan illustrator, designer and technical draftsman and carpenter of workshop following his training inPresentation Design. Since 2001, he has been teaching at the college level in this field in addition tobeing a co-founder of Art Tandem since 2008. This artist is represented in a gallery in Halifax andQuebec and he has won several distinctions over the years, including in 2023 2rd place in thecompetition of works of art from Diffusion culturelle de Lévis and the jury's favourite prize from theSymposium Village en arts in 2021.For several years, Yan felt a growing desire to move beyond the boundaries of commercial illustration and explore a more artistic and creative direction. In late 2008, this desire took shape, leading Yan to embrace a more spontaneous and accessible form of artistic expression. Yan’s creative process begins with the sketching of a light texture using mortar applied with a spatula. Layers of gouache and acrylic are then built up to create nuanced depth and rich coloration. The surface is rubbed, wiped, and aged—sometimes with a rag, sometimes with bare hands—giving the work a soft, vaporous quality. Through this process, Yan creates "fantastic" panoramas that evoke the infinite interplay between sky and water, shaped by explorations of contrast, light, and intensity. These scenes hover between moments—perhaps before or after a storm, a sense of calm, or simply a fleeting moment of pure serenity. Each piece invites the viewer to interpret the setting through their own lens, drawing on personal memories and emotions to connect with the work and uncover their own meaning and symbolism within it.
