TennesseeUniversity of Florida, M.D. Stephen Golder is a semi-retired radiation oncologist who has had a lifelong interest in photography. Never able to draw much more than stick figures with a pencil, he was attracted early on to photography and found great satisfaction in composing images. With the evolution from analog to digital photography and computer processing, he finds that the creative aspect of photography has increased considerably. At the same time, there remains his love of a hands-on approach, more like the original old darkroom photography of days gone by. His current efforts at combining these very different experiences are exhibited here as Van Dyke Brown prints My need for a creative outlet has always been satisfied by photography. It began in my teenage years when I was given my father’s Nikon D-5. The art of folks like Ansel Adams, Alfred Steiglitz, Dorthea Lange, Helen Levitt and others as well as the book “The Family of Man” served as inspiration. As I look at the world with my “photographer’s eyes,” I find that there are images to be taken everywhere I look. My work reflects this eclectic approach. In early 2020 I had the good fortune to take a course on Platinum/Palladium printing from David Michael Kennedy, a leading practitioner of this technique, truly a lifechanging experience. The images exhibited here were created using a variation of the technique I learned. It is an old printing technique from the late 1800’s called Van Dyke Brown. A border around the image itself, hand painted when the emulsion is applied to the paper, is one of the signature aspects of this type of image, which is printed on a hand-prepared piece of paper and exposed by means of sunlight. Each one is a unique piece of art.
