Shannon Smith Hughes is an accomplished oil painter known for her masterful use of light, painterly brushwork, and expressive color. Whether capturing landscapes, still lifes, interiors, or figures, her work is united by a keen sensitivity to the way light transforms everyday scenes. From sunlight filtering through trees at the end of a quiet road to the reflective glow of copper and silver in a still life, or the moody ambiance of a dimly lit restaurant, Shannon’s paintings invite viewers to experience the beauty in fleeting moments. Using a direct, alla prima approach, she paints with emotion and immediacy, aiming to evoke the same sense of wonder she feels in the presence of her subjects. A lifelong artist, Shannon comes from a distinguished family of creatives, including her mother, Betty Anglin Smith, and her triplet siblings, Jennifer Smith Rogers and Tripp Smith. Together, they own and operate Anglin Smith Fine Art in Charleston’s historic French Quarter. Living and painting in the Lowcountry for nearly three decades, Shannon has honed her craft through studies in the U.S. and Europe with esteemed artists such as Kim English, Greg Kreutz, Kenn Backhaus, and Quang Ho. As a signature member of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, Shannon frequently travels to paint and exhibit with this accomplished group, bringing her love for light and atmosphere to new landscapes. Shannon is a Signature Member of American Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America. She has also shared her expertise through plein air workshops, both locally and in Italy. Her work is part of prominent corporate and private collections, including the Clemson University Foundation, Piggly Wiggly Corporate Headquarters, and Delaney Oyster House in Charleston. Through her evocative paintings, Shannon continues to inspire collectors and art enthusiasts with her ability to capture the subtle poetry of light in everyday life.
