ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Michael Kilburn was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1949, a city of many artists, both writers and painters. At the age of 6, Ontario, Canada became home for the Kilburn family. Michael, always had an aptitude for art and was encouraged to pursue it as a career, but the business world beckoned and he spent 33 years in the cosmetics industry, specifically as General Manager of Sally Hansen Canada, using his love of colour as a segue from nail polish to oil paint. His painting career began in earnest in the late 1990’s while cottaging in Halliburton, where Tom Thomson, and others of the Group of 7 influenced his style. It has seasoned further with intensive training and studying of artists JohnAnderson, Calvin Liang, Richard Schmidt, and Kevin MacPherson. Today, retired and painting full time, Michael’s work reflects the many locales where he and his wife Linda divide their time. The rugged landscapes and stark beauty of Newfoundland, the heat and light of Florida and the lush greenery and seasons of northern Ontario. His whereabouts can be traced by his weekly e-mailing of the “painting of the week” to his many collectors and fans around the world. Michael’s particular style of capturing landscape rich in light, colour and contrast may be viewed at the Peter Lewis Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland, at their homes in Barrie, Ontario, and in Naples, Florida.
