Artistic Process and New Series "My new series, entitled 'Tilt, The Energy of Objects,' has been influenced by the Japanese art of flower arranging called 'Ikebana.' The idea of the series started when a client commissioned me to create a painting in the style of the great artist Gustav Klimt. Starting with my sketchbook, I translate my designs onto large, cradled wood panels. The designs are then 'outlined' with gold relief paint. The next step is to use stencils and modeling paste to create a design that will live beneath the surface of the paint. After the stencil work is dry, the enameled paint is then poured into the outlines. This is a deeply complex process, where I must calculate the exact mixture of each paint to create the desired effect. Every step takes time and measured precision. My intent is to create art that is filled with joyful energy, rich color, brilliant texture, and an experience that is unique and timeless. My hope is that the 'Tilt' series does just that!" Inspirations and Evolution In 2024, Genie finds inspiration in "the unseen energy within and around objects. Creating a playful relationship between the organic and practical elements of a composition continues to intrigue me!" Her process has evolved over the years, with Genie experimenting more than ever before. "I’ve expanded my visual vocabulary, filling notebooks with new ideas, while also subtracting some concepts that no longer work for me." New Colors and Themes "It seems that every year I fall in love with a particular color. This year, it’s hot pink. It first hit me hard with 'The Barbie Movie.' Then, a trip to Naples, on the west coast of Florida, and 'PINK' exploded in my brain!" Life and Inspiration in Florida Genie lives and works in Pompano Beach, Florida, where the vibrant environment continuously fuels her creativity. "I’m blessed to be a Florida artist. I love the heat, our endless blue skies, and the ridiculously wonderful tropical plants showcased against our amazing oceans and waterways. Anyone who gets to live here, or visit, is L.U.C.K.Y." A Perfect Day Genie's perfect day encapsulates her passion for art and her love for her surroundings: "Having morning coffee with my husband. Painting until 4:00 pm. Meeting my art friends for a drink. Having dinner with my husband. Taking a walk."Through her evolving process, bold use of color, and dedication to capturing the unseen energy within objects, Genie Appel-Cohen continues to captivate and inspire with her timeless and joyful creations.
