One look at Colin Branham’s art and you’re immediately immersed in a world of boundless energy, where freedom and exploration flow through each abstract piece. A third-generation artist, Colin comes from a legacy of creativity—both his grandfather and his mother, Robin Branham, an accomplished artist herself, have inspired his journey since childhood. Growing up between their studios and galleries, he naturally gravitated toward a career in art. He completed his BA in Fine Arts at UC Irvine and transitioned to painting full-time, drawn by the chance to convey his own voice through color, form, and texture.Though influenced by his family’s legacy, Colin’s work is distinctly his own. He uses the canvas to explore his personal style, marked by his exceptional skill in balancing positive and negative space, adding depth, and invoking a sense of motion. His works are rich in kinetic energy yet retain a calming effect, engaging viewers in a world of texture, layers, and contrasts. Each painting is a journey, with Colin’s process being highly experimental. Using unconventional tools like razor blades, power sanders, and palette knives, he crafts intricate textures on his canvases, adding layers of acrylic pigments and polymers to create surfaces that are both visually compelling and tactile.Colin’s inspiration often comes from travel and time spent in foreign museums, where he explores the art and culture of diverse regions. Each new experience informs his work, which evolves organically through a process of discovery rather than strict planning. “The thing I love most about creating is the freedom,” Colin says, describing how each piece develops as he experiments with new techniques and materials. This openness to exploration is central to his artistic philosophy and keeps his work ever-evolving. For Colin, spending long hours in the studio isn’t just a habit—it’s his way of constantly challenging himself to push boundaries and discover new expressions of his style.Beyond his creative pursuits, Colin finds deep satisfaction in sharing his work with others. He has shown his art at the Celebration of Fine Art, a show that has become a meaningful part of his career. The event provides a unique environment where he reconnects with fellow artists, enjoys a sense of community, and showcases his latest work to art lovers. Here, he finds value in the conversations and feedback from viewers, as each interaction adds to his journey as an artist. With a quote from Steve Jobs as his mantra—"Sometimes it’s better to be a pirate than join the Navy"—Colin captures the adventurous, sometimes unpredictable path of his life in art. This perspective, combined with his love for the creative freedom that art brings, gives each of his paintings a dynamic and uniquely personal character. For Colin, art is not only about creating something beautiful but about inviting others into his world of exploration and self-expression.
