Educator, museum director, art historian, designer, photographer and musician, David Levy looms large in the creative world. He led Sotheby’s Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. As CEO of Parsons School of Design, he invested in the institution’s purpose and raised its profile. After establishing new areas of study, he went on to become chancellor of the New School for Social Research. Schooled at Columbia University (BA) and New York University (MA, PhD.), Levy specialized in African art. During his 14-year- tenure at the Corcoran, Washington’s oldest museum, Levy hung one of Alexander Calder’s larger works where all could see. He delighted in its energy, its relationship with space and people. With a deep bow to Calder, Levy’s creations are lyrical and light, with surprisingly complex balance.
